Did You Know?

For now at least, crime
is decreasing-especially property crime like burglary. Crime experts have
cited a number of reasons for the lower burglary rate, one of which is that
more homes than ever now have electronic alarm systems. A study conducted by Security
Distributing & Market magazine shows that 14% of U.S. households now
have a home burglar alarm.
This growth in home
alarm sales is fueled by a desire of people like you to provide safety and
security for their families. Ownership of alarm system also may have an
economic benefit. SDM magazine identified 12 home owners' insurance
companies that offer premium discounts for having a security system.
Alarms
Are Effective
Virtually all -
97 percent - of home security system owners believe that their systems are
effective at guarding against a home break-in, according to a 1998 study of
40,000 U.S. households.
Homes
Without Alarms Are Burglarized 3 To 1
Homes without a
security system are nearly three times more likely to be burglarized as
electronically secured homes, according to a 1991 study.
Most Home
Burglaries Occur During The Day.
59% of home
burglaries are carried out during the day. 41% of home burglaries are carried
out at nighttime.
Most
Burglaries Are Forced Entry
Two-thirds of
burglaries are carried out by forcible entry, making the detection
capabilities of an alarm system a crucial function.
Burglary
Clock
If Burglaries
occurred at fixed time intervals, rather than randomly, one burglary would
occur every 13 seconds in the United States. This figure is based on 1996
crime statistics as reported by police to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Average
Loss Per Home Burglary
A burglarized
home can mean both an emotional upheaval and a monetary loss. A 1991
study shows that a home with an alarm system, if burglarized, experiences
a loss that is considerably less than the $1,350 average loss.
